The research into Classification categories is important as we need to suit our film to a particular classification category, the reason for this is because if there is any inappropriate content or violence in our film opening we will need to warn the public on who is suitable to watch it. Post apocalyptic films have varied classifications, these vary between PG13-18, it is rare to find any below a PG13 due to the violence in the films.
Here are a couple of examples:
I Am Legend - (15)
Shaun of the Dead - (15)
After Shock - (18)
2012 - ( PG13)

Representing Social Groups
The social group we are trying to represent in our post apocalyptic film opening is mainly males of the age 16-24. The reason for this is due to our research it showed that males between 16-24 years of age watch post apocalyptic films so we tried to incorporate this into our film opening. However, we are also targetting a more specific groups of teenagers between 15-19 years of age, to achieve this we have two young actors in the film opening which show that teenagers aren't the stereotypical lazy, anti social people they are made out to be. In our film opening we show the opposite of that stereotype as we show a teenager who can survive the after affects of the flood on his own, with the will to go on despite losing his family to the flood. Also, our other character in the film opening is a female, even though she doesnt appear for very long in the film opening, she would have a important role in the film, it shows that females are also very responsible and are able to survive just as much as man are.

Risk Assesment.
Our chosen location wasn't overly dangerous as it is used as a public footpath for people, however there were some debris lying around, for example, old pipes and paint cans which could of potentially caused an accident if we weren't careful on watching where we was walking.
The abandoned train tracks could of been another potential hazard as they are easy to trip over due to the steel being risen above the ground. also the ground around where we was filming was quite slippy which could of caused a potential accident if we had slipped on it.
Due to us making ourselves aware of these hazards before filming it allowed us to take more care when we was walking around and therefore our team finished filming with no injuries.
Recce Shots of Location
These are some pictures of our location of filming, the pictures show a abandoned train track and a dark forest, this is where the two survivors meet and the train track is where one of the survivors is sat as they are injured.

Mood Board
Mood Board
This is our moodboard, it consists of images involving all things you'd expect to see from a flood, for example, Heavy rain, damaged and washed out landscapes and vehicles submerged in water. The centre image of our moodboard which states 'Surviving disaster' links heavily with our film opening as that is what the characters in our film have appeared to have done. The reason we have added a picture of a foggy view is because during our film opening this is what our weather is going to be, as it is after the flood, this is what creates a post apocalyptic theme as it is after the flood.
Interviews.
These are our interviews we did in order to get feedback on our film opening and also to see the thoughts of the public on other post apocalyptic film and how they are similar to our film opening, it gives us an insight into what audience to target from some of the questions posed to the people in our interviews.
I personally put this interview together by using an editing software, by doing this I could set the interviews out more clearly as i have asked one question followed by the 5 different responses to show the difference in opinions between the people in the interview. This allowed us to collectively, as a group, see what kind of audience we should be targetting, also a few of the people gave us feedback on our idea which allowed us to get the best from the opening.

Production Logo
This is our production logo for our production company, different ideas have been used in order to create this logo. The TBS part of our logo stands for Tom, Ben and Sophie, we used the first 3 letters of our first names in order to implement a personal stamp on our production company. Also the colours of our logo are used to connote a flood, due to our first film opening is based on a flood, it is a very calming and simple colour to use. Due to use mixing a few different shades of blue in our production logo in order to make it more appealing to the eye and to make it less boring. The logo in our production logo is made to have connotations of water and the flood, this links back to our film opening as it is about a flood. The font used in the logo is a very smooth, clean font, we used this as we thought it was easy on the eye, however there are no specific links to our film opening in using this.
Actors & Directors
Sophie Pilling
This is Sophie, who will be an Actress in our film opening, Sophie will play the role of the survivor in our film. The Main Character (Myself) will meet Sophie next to an abandoned train track where she will be injured from attempting to survive the after effects of the Flood.
This is Ben Thomas who will be the Director in our short film opening, Ben will be mainly responsible of making sure we include as many camera angles as possible and making sure we follow the story board.
This is me (Tom), I have been volunteered by my other group members to take on the role of being the main actor in our short film opening, I have also been mainly in charge of gathering the props and going out to take pictures of the location we are filming at. A different range of camera angles will be shown in our opening, included a conversation between myself and the other actor, Sophie.

Weather for Filming
We will keep a close eye on the weather through the week to see if there are any changes, if the weather lets us down on the day of filming we would have to film another day or rethink our idea.
Animatic
This is our animatic for our film opening, this helps us with putting the different shots in order and how long each shot will last for so when it comes to filming we know how long we will be filming each shot. It also helps us with knowing what shot comes next in the sequence so we can prepare our props and experiment the different shots before filming it.
Also, since the first story board we have decided to add a few more shots onto the story board as the animatic showed that it wouldn't of been a 2 minute film, by adding these shots this has made our animatic around 2 minutes.

Film Practice Shots
Before we start to film at the end of next week, we have decided to experiment with practice shots, this very short video shows a few close up shots of putting the items in the bag, these shots will be used in the start of our film opening. We edited these shots in premier in order to give us some practice at editing so when it comes to editing our film we have an idea of how to do it

Audience Statistics..
These are the Audience ratings of the film 'World War Z'. it shows that more males have voted on the rating the film at around 152,884 votes, however the average rating given by females on this film is 7.3, this is 0.3 ratings higher than that given by males, this is very surprising as i would think more males would approve of this film more than females. It also shows the film is more appealing to that of users under the age of 18 at an average rating of 7.8, whereas this contrasts to the slightly lower rating og 6.9 given by aged 30-44 year olds.
This is the audience ratings from the film 'I am legend', this also shows, unsurprisingly, like world war z that more males have voted on the film. however both males and females average a rating of 7.1 on this film, showing it is equally approved by both male and female. It also shows that also like world war z, this film targets a younger audience as a average 7.8 rating was given by people under the age of 18 whereas people aged 30-44 was again at 6.9
To conclude from both these figures, is that people aged 18 and under prefer a post apocalyptic movie, this therefore means for our post apocalyptic film it will have to be targeted at that aged audience in order for us to achieve the best possible feedback and ratings for our film opening.

Research into Production and Distribution companies
The production company may be directly responsible for fundraising for the production, they may achieve this through a parent company, partner or private investor. It handles budgeting, scheduling, scripting, the supply with talent and resources, the organisation of staff, the production itself, post production, distribution and marketing.
The disributor is mainly responsible for the marketing of the film, they also set the release date of the film, and when the film will premiere.
This is just a short list of Production and distribution companies within the film industry that tie in with the Post-apocalyptic film genre that I am researching.
'I am legend' was produced and distributed by alot of companies, these included Warner Bros. and village roadshow pictures, this shows that alot of big production companies are needed in order to create this film.
'World War Z' - UTV motion pictures & Plan B entertainment - (Distributed by) - Paramount Pictures.
2012 - Columbia Pictures & Spyglass Entertainment - (Distributed by) - Columbia pictures
I have concluded that many of the Production and Distribution companies stick within one genre as they feel more comfortable with that genre, however some of them tend to broaden their options and choose a different genre. Also I have concluded that many of the big, successful films have had alot of production and distribution companies working within them in order to attract more of an audience
Zombie land Film opening.
This is the opening credits to the Film 'Zombie land', this is the 3rd film opening that i have looked into that fits into the genre of Post apocalyptic.
Mise en scene-
The lighting of the opening credits is quite bright as they are set outside, this contrasts the film as the idea of the film is quite dark due to it being based around a zombie apocalypse. The opening title sequence to this film is one of the best I've researched, due to the effort that's been put into it, it creates excitement and also makes the audience want to carry on watching due to it being action filled from the very beginning.Costumes - The costumes in the opening credits of the film are that of normal civilians, however they have been cut up and covered with blood in order to create the effect of them being a zombie, this also shows the audience that the film is about a zombie apocalypse.
The sound in the opening credits is of a good quality and the song playing along with the credits is quite a loud, fast paced rock song, this creates the effect that the film is very quick into the plot at the start of the film, also the dark music creates a dark mood within the film and this then reflects onto the audience.

Researching Film openings - Apocolyptic.
Researching World War Z
For my short film I will be doing a post apocolyptic film so therefore I will be researching for film openings from that genre, the first film opening I have researched is 'World war z'.
This is the an establishing shot that is seen in the opening scene, this shows the person watching, the surroundings of where the film is set.

This is another shot from the opening scene of the film which shows a new bulletin, this creates an enigma for the audience as they start to question what is happening, also by doing this is makes them want to carry on watching the film.
![]() |
This is another screen shot of the film opening, it shows one of the actresses starring in the film and the picture to the right shows everyday life in a busy train station.
This is showing piers morgan , a well known journalist and presenter , telling the news to the audience of an apocolypse, this informsthe audience on the genre of the film.
This shot shows peculiar behaviour, and the way it has been covered on the news shows its unusual to see this kind of behaviour, lets the audience know whats happening.
Mise en scene -
Costumes - The costumes in the film opening are just ordinary people in normal clothes, this is to show everyday life and what people wear on a regular basis.

Researching Film openings - Book of eli
The Book of Eli
For my second choice of film I will be researching 'The book of eli' as it fits in with the genre I am doing for my final film , post apocolyptic.
This is the very opening scene in 'The book of eli' this shows a man alone in the desert, this makes the audience question why he is there and why he's alone. Also shows him as a sillouette which contrasts the background, shows he is secretive and trying to stay under the radar. This shows a closer up image of the character in the first screen shot, it shows him wearing a head scarf around his mouth, this is to protect his identity, also gets the audience questioning why he wants to protect his identity.
This is another screen shot from the film opening, in this shot, a dissolve is used in this shot to keep the continuity in the scene, shows the character close up and shows the character in the distance.
In this shot it is showing a long shot of the character, this implies the character has been walking for a long time as the same background it used and the sky is becoming darker, this makes the audience again question the film on why he is walking for this long and where he is walking to.
This is another shot basically showing the title of the film, pathetic fallacy has been used as the dark sky background could reflect the dark mood of the film
Mise en scene.
Costumes - In the book of eli, the character is wearing a head scarf around his mouth and he is also wearing glasses, this is to protect his identity, also gets the audience questioning why he wants to protect his identity, this ties in with the fact that he is in a desert also. The bag pack shows that he has alot of valuable things in there, such as clothes and weapons etc, this is to protect him against the dangers of being on his own.
Lighting - In the Book of eli, lighting has been used in order to create an effect on the audience, the light background in the first shot contrasts with the dark background in the last shot, this shows the character has been walking for a long time and its becoming dark. Also the dark sky background could have connotations of death and darkness, the director has used this to create a dark and mysterious mood, showing something bad is going to happen.
